


SMplayer has no support for hardware decoding in Windows because it does not support Microsoft's DxVA. On Windows, however, the situation is flipped around. VLC with libva acceleration in Linux is still running at around 30% CPU. The performance on 1080p video streams is absolutely SPECTACULAR. SMplayer in Linux has really good support for hardware-accelerated video decoding via vdpau or libva. SMplayer (and Mplayer) have partially working DVD menus but most of the time they don't render correctly or just flat out don't work.įor video playback, it really depends on what OS you're running. VLC has better playlist and media library support, so if you're playing music go with VLC.
